武士道といふは、 死ぬ事と見つけたり。 二つ二つの場にて、 早く死ぬ方に 片付くばかりなり。 別に仔細なし。 胸すわつて進むなり。 図に当らぬは 犬死などといふ事は、 上方風の打ち上りたる 武道なるべし。
二つ二つの場にて、 図に当るやうにわかることは、 及ばざることなり。 我人、生きる方がすきなり。 多分すきの方に理が付くべし。 若し図にはづれて生きたらば、 腰抜けなり。 この境危うきなり。
図にはづれて死にたらば、 犬死気違なり。 恥にはならず。 これが武道に丈夫なり。
毎朝毎夕、 改めては死に改めては死に、 常住死身になりて居る時は、 武道に自由を得、 一生越度なく、 家職を仕果すべきなり。

The samurai understood the Way as a readiness to die. Life forces choices; when it does, take the harder path and do not agonize. Leave the details; set your heart, and move.

It is said that every samurai should hold the Way close to heart — yet ask one, plainly, what that Way means, and few can answer without hesitation. That hesitation itself shows how rarely the question is truly settled within.

A life is at its peak in youth. Hold your resolve high enough that it need not answer to anyone in the room. Examine everything, in every matter, for as long as you live. We all, equally, wish to live — and so reason tends to gather around whichever path lets us do that.

Even fifty or sixty years ago, a samurai would bathe each morning, groom his hair, scent himself with incense, and never once neglect his appearance — ready, each day, for the possibility that it might be his last, so that he would not fall in an unseemly state.
